Does anyone else do this beyond the Disney Years?

Over the last couple of years my Number One Daughter - after a slow start when films just did not really interest her at all - is starting to show a, mature for her years, interest in movies. She's moved away from 'family friendly' fare into the grown up world of REAL MOVIES. I'm more than happy to share my favourites with her. The other night we watched Double Indemnity - not the usual sort of thing I imagine 13 year old girls would go for but she was hooked. Her gasp of horror "NO!" when Neff shot Phyllis was genuine. Her verdict? "What a great f*cking film!"

Other important films we have in common, (important to us - not necessarily so in global terms) are The Bride of Frankenstein, F**king Amal, Moon, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, A Scanner Darkly, Hairspray (the original), Dark City, anything by Roger Corman from the 50s and 60s (she can quote great chunks of Little Shop of Horrors verbatim). Hal Hartly is another favourite. We were both in tears at the end of Harold and Maude. The list goes on.

Her attempts to educate me in the way of the teenager have been a bit more hit and miss. I really didn't get on with Chicago (though she liked the earlier Ginger Rogers version Roxie Heart a lot more than she thought she would when I showed it to her.)

But Juno was a hit with me. She drank Sunny D for weeks after first watching it. And I loved it. (Hate Sunny D) ...and The Danish Girl, which she borrowed from her English teacher to show me, was wonderful!

I'm curious as to how other people bring their kids to their favourite films and what their reactions are. Have you been disappointed? I was when she didn't get Galaxy Quest at all and left me to it. Are you surprised by your kids' reactions to films?
