Ooh, very reminiscent of Paul Nash with those fractured lines.

You spotted it! Taken a while to get this sorted out. :D So many ideas, but in the end the style and harsh lines fit the story far better than any other art, or even photos.

Great. Time to drug those butterflies with Scotch. Works for me, although I prefer beer.

    Great cover.

It's actually "La Mitrailleuse" by Christopher Richard Wynne Nevison.

Fantasy connection, possibly: the soldier on the left looks very similar to some of artist Ian Miller's orcs, and I wonder if he was inspired by it.

    That's a super cover.
Susan, your author name is small. Too small…?

You are correct, HereBrain. I knew both the work of Nevison and Nash were being considered, and wrongly assumed it was by Nash. Same school I believe and painting at the same time.

    Not my call, Stephen.

Bugger, I should have known that. It's actually one of the illustrations in a book of WWI poetry I've got. (Though the colours are considerably more subdued in the book.) There's a detail of his Troops Resting, too, which has exactly the same feel and style. Anyway, good find!

I wondered what it would look like as a thumbnail, so here it is (and it still looks good IMHO**):

** - I, for one, can live with the "of" being nigh on invisible: it's hardly the most important word in the title. :)

IMO Susan's name is way too small. Susan, I'd definitely mention this to Penmore.

    I think it looks cool.

It kind of reminds me of a corny old game cover - I mean that with all due respect as I like corny old game covers.
