Man gets rebuilt, Earth gets depopulated, all kinds of stuff...

This was a pretty recent book - last couple of years or so.

Humanity has found an alien base on the Moon. While exploring it, one of the investigators seemingly gets taken apart and put back together. He's taken back to Earth, where he eventually reveals himself to be acting as an agent for the remote descendants of humanity, who want people to stop using wormholes, which remove free will because they connect different times (it's a bit vague on this point).

In the process of sabotaging the wormholes, this agent also manages to land some future tech on Earth, which proceeds to depopulate the planet.

The really irritating thing is that, right after I posted the question here, the name of the author popped up fully formed in my brain.

Also works with yelling, "Where the hell are my keys?"

And is it any good? I have it on my wish list but can't remember where I got the recommendation from.

It's ok. I read it all the way through, didn't particularly feel disappointed, and it had some good concepts, but I feel no urge to buy the second book.

Okay, I must admit the blurb doesn't quite capture my imagination. I shall keep it on my list but not fast track it!
