An Alternate History, circa 6th century. Characters include the ghost of Alexander the Great, Mohammed, Zenobia and a lady gladiator. Magic has delayed eruption of Vesuvius but when it finally did go it was something like Yellowstone. Multi volume work but not known how many. WHY am I so forgetful of things I have enjoyed?

Haven't read it, but is there any chance it was The Shadow of Ararat by Thomas Harlan?
