Love Stories

Unconditional Love

I thought I’d found the one, y’know? All those mushy love songs and poems and movies, I started to get it. The boys joked she had my manhood in a jar under the kitchen sink.

Then she hit me with the ultimatum. One or the other. I guess we all make our choices sooner or later.

“We don’t need that silly girl anyways, do we, Boots?”

Boots barked and wagged her tail in agreement.

THE CALL OF THE NORTH

"My kingdom!" he pleaded. "For you, if you'll be my Queen."
I wanted him, all laughing eyes, slim-hipped and strong. I wanted his sun-sparkled city and peaceful kingdom.
The North wind rose, chilling me. My people wouldn't understand. They'd bring war; children would die.
"Love....?" He knew.
I turned and left, hand on my stomach. I couldn't stay, but I could carry part of him to the North with me.

NIGEL AND BETTY

Willow Meaner cringed from behind her smoking cauldron. “Are you being serious?”

Nigel looked at his pig, Betty: big button nose, big blue eyes. “I know it's wrong,” said Nigel, “but this way it'll be right.”

Willow sighed: “Whatever.” With a snap of her fingers, she turned Nigel into a pig.

Nigel trotted home, Betty at his side. She invited him into her den. “I love you, Nigel,” she oinked.

“I love you, Betty.”

Love Stinks

Jonathan carefully slapped the table with his hand. Since becoming a zombie last year, he’d learned to be cautious with his rotting limbs.

“Alice, it’s no use. I see the disgust your eyes, when I eat raw meat. How you cringe at the stink of me when I forget the cologne. All of it. There’s only one solution-divorce.”

Alice looked at her husband, tears flowing. “ You’re right, there is only one solution.”

“Bite me.”

The White House

It's not easy loving a policeman in my line of work.
I’d never been exactly straight as far as the law was concerned and some things in my past no one knew about,
certainly not Louis.
But sometimes you just have to make a choice.
And as I watched that plane take off and I knew the choice was made.
Still. I was right. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

Sunday 3am

I think her name is Mary.
I think she’s studying drama.
I think my jeans are in the corner and if I can get out of bed without waking her…

She rolls over, still asleep.

I like the way her breathing sounds.
I liked the way she snorted a little when she laughed.
I really liked the ways she did that thing with her tongue and…

I think my shirt is in the kitchen.

The Three Suitors

Once upon a time, three suitors vied for the hand of Queen Aletor.

"Marry me, because I am learned and wise," said Malaka, the famed wizard.

"Marry me, because I am brave and true," said Loton, the renowned warrior.

"Marry me, because I am kind and gentle," said Relifar, the noted poet.

"I am all of these things myself," replied Queen Aletor. "I shall marry none, but love you all."

They lived happily ever after.

Harry Lied

Remember that old Harry Nilsson song? Can’t live, if living is without you.

Yeah, great song. Romantic, right? Been hearing that song for so many years, so bloody romantic.

At least that’s what I thought. Man, I was so wrong. I see that now. I’m such a jerk. He wasn’t talking about romance.

I tightened that cord around my arm and shot the heroin into my vein.

Yeah. Can’t live, if living is without you.

My teachers say it is a choice

But I can't control it.

No matter how much I'm beaten I can't change it

Her smile lights up my world, her touch makes me shiver

When we kiss I have hope.

Its too late though, my parents won’t understand

Love doesn’t discriminate

But this rope is a choice. We stand atop my bed, hands clasped.

Our last act is a choice; to be two girls, together forever.

True Love ( or last will and testament )

“We're going to flip the switch and the transfer will be complete. Are you sure you want to do this?”

I flicked my eyes from the brain in the jar, to the beautiful doll-roid on the table.

“What choice do I have? It was her last will and testament,” I whispered.

He hit the switch and the lights dimmed. The doll-roid blinked and spoke. “Paul, did you take out the garbage like I asked?”

Come With Me
"Come and stay with me, Angelique." The evening sunlight shone through his golden hair, framing his perfectly chiselled features in silhouette.

"Oh, Brent," I sighed. "Where?" I held him tight, running my fingers across the firm muscle of his shoulders and back. He'd shown me the world -- Paris, Rio, New York, and more besides -- and I'd never felt so happy.

"Home. To Luton."

"Luton?"

He was still crying by the time my taxi arrived.

Saturday Afternoon at Bonnie’s

“No.”

“Absolutely not.”

“I know it’s been a while, but the Hammers are playing.”

“For pity’s sake, woman, not the tears!”

“Look, if I say yes, will you quit crying?”

“All right then, just a quickie. But remember, if things go pear-shaped, this was your choice. I wanted to watch the footie.”

“Yes, I love you too. You dig out the ski masks, I’ll get the shotguns.”

One Or The Other

I stood, frozen. The world passed me by, but for me, it seemed like time had stopped.

My gaze shot between them, never resting on one. It was so difficult…I was afraid of losing both.

Finally, I took a deep breath. A decision had to be made, here and now.

I smiled as I grabbed the Oreo cookies over the Chips Ahoy.

The Only Gift

“Honey, you’re crying.”
“The investigator called--dad’s been dead ten years.”
“Joey, forgive me, I can’t feel sorry. He was a violent drunk. He could’ve killed you.”
“....I never told you something...he wept once after beating me, told me about his father--he was a monster. Pop kissed me, then passed out. I forgave him every punch. I wouldn’t be here today if he hadn’t loved me enough to leave. Suse..my father’s dead.”

LAST LAUGH

She was the most beautiful woman in the world and I was in love with her.

When I professed my love, she laughed.

"I love your brother you fool," she said, and she laughed.

They flaunted their love in front of me, and they laughed.

One night as they slept in each others arms, I took her life.

I'll surely hang for this, but what's to become of my conjoined twin brother?

I LAUGHED!

Meine Liebe

The kraut looks half a boy, cowering at the end of my Thompson. He probably thinks the same about me.

Empty your pockets, I order in German.

It’s the usual detritus, nothing of value to SOE. I pause over a photo. Young girl, dark hair, pretty eyes. Mischievous smile. She reminds me of Helen.

Hanna, he says, pleading. Miene liebe.

I have orders. I should shoot him.

Go, I say. Go home to your love.

The Universal Language

The Snartius ship, Nergurgurlaxurgerherner, 2nd octant of minor marginal cluster Mihiliwikunwayga, 140.2D.

“Capitane, we’ve slurped an infestation of a blue planet nearby, it’s overrun by hairless bipedal inseminators.”

“Oh-o goody, I was feeling hungry – how many?”

“7.092 billion, sir”

“Hrmph. Just a snack. Oh well, let us have them then!”

“But darling! Look, they express affection with their food holes, like us! How romantic. You must leave this one, my pudding.”

“…..Yes, dear. Continue, Boba.”

Venus Verticordia

Pricked by the arrow of desire I wandered the earth, searching for the God who loved me. Instead I found his mother, jealous Venus.

She sent me to infernal Dis to die, but love saved me.

Wait, what is this? What is in Proserpina’s box?

Waking from slumber I see his face, love in his eyes.

Venus told me he loved her, but he chose me.

Cupid chose me.

Suck on that, Venus.

Love Above All

Everything was fine at first. She was there for what felt like my whole life, even after I left the nest.

When I saw her though things were different, she was there but at the same time not.

I sat next to the bed holding her hand, saw her look my way and in her final moments with me she gathered strength she did not have and say, "I love you son..."
