I expect there will be lovers and haters of this. Personally, I wasn't going to watch it; it has been so dreadful recently, but I'm glad that I did. It was interesting and original. They haven't messed about with the TARDIS dimensions like that much before - there was a Patrick Troughton episode The Mind Robber when they are taken out of reality and then the TARDIS explodes, or Jon Pertwee materialising inside a miniscope, and there was the Tom Baker episodes when they visited E-Space. However, they haven't done a 2D reality before as far as I remember. Someone will probably make a list of the rules of physics this episode broke, but I'd allow them all just for the sight of Clara's Mary Poppins handbag. The Doctor feeding her a Sledge Hammer out of the TARDIS inside the bag and the Adams Family movement were worth it.

The Boneless were pretty creepy and I liked seeing the TARDIS shrunk down. Rigsy should stay on as a companion. Christopher Fairbank was excellent as Fenton who was a complete *******.

Lots of things I want to capture from this one!

I'm wondering about the recurrences of wrong-sized things in this season. First the dinosaur, then everyone shrunken inside a Dalek, then the people-sized vents all over the bank, then the gigantic spider-bacteria and the creature that hatched from the moon and immediately laid another one, and now the Killer Graffiti (sorry, the Boneless) shrinking people into two dimensions, shrinking the TARDIS, making themselves into giant body parts.

"Don't give me an ish." "These readings are very ... ishy."

"Could you not just let me enjoy this moment of not knowing something? It happens so rarely."

"Aliens?" "Possibly. Oh, who am I kidding? Probably."

"I'm the Doctor. Doctor Oswald. You can call me Clara." "What are you a doctor of?" "Well, I'm usually quite vague about that. I think I usually just pick the title because it makes me sound important."

"It's bigger on the inside." "You know, I don't think that statement's ever been truer."

Err..."What up bitch?" Really, Danny?

"Are we really hiding from killer graffiti? This is insane." "I agree. We'll have to think of a better name than that."

How do you talk to two-dimensional beings with sound? Isn't sound three-dimensional? I really would have thought writing (graffiti, anyone?) would have been better.

"Let's start with pi. Even in a flat world they'll have circles. I don't mean edible pie, I mean circular pi. Which I realize would also apply to edible pie."

"What's that then, a deflattener?" "We're not calling it a deflattener."

"2-D-is?" "It's called the toodis."

"Can't you move the TARDIS? ... No, I mean you move the TARDIS, like ... Addams family ?" Followed by the funniest freaking thing ever. (Although I'm reasonably sure it would have been fine if left where it was -- trains don't drag on the ground.)

"Can we ram the blockage?" "Is this official? 'cause I've always wanted to ram something."

Nice speech at the end. "You are monsters. That is the role you are determined to play... So it seems I must play mine... The man that stops the monsters... This plane is protected."

"Why can't you just say I did good? I was the Doctor and I was good." "You were an exceptional doctor, Clara. Goodness had nothing to do with it." This "good man" thing just keeps popping up. I can't help but think of "Demons run when a good man goes to war...."

And there's that Missy again.

It was interesting and kept my attention.

It was clever to see Clara put in the position of the Doctor, but it remains tiring that Moffat's series remains focused on Young Girls And Their Lovers Who Travel With The Doctor.

I thought this was a great episode, it really creeped me out more than a couple of times with its creeping walls and flattening of people etc. Great resolution too with the painting of a door to trick them to channelling their energy into the TARDIS. The effect on the 3D boneless wasn't bad either.

The Doctor poking out of his mini-TARDIS and passing implausible items like a mallet and his dimension gizmo, and the "Addams family" moment was hilarious (even if I can foresee the steam from TEIN's ears!!) - when did the Doctor sit around and watch the Addams family?!

Missy tagged on the end again, watching Clara on a tablet and saying she's chosen well.... still fairly unclear what Missy has done other than drink tea and eat cake, but her plans must surely come to the fore pretty soon. And they involve Clara, which is a shocker, narratively :p

I really liked this episode: having 2D monsters lurking unseen on any surface is genuinely creepy; lots of amusing dialogue**; there was enough running about to keep one from thinking too hard about the science, but it was running for a purpose (escape), not just a random panic; I was (vaguely***) reminded of the Doctor series set in abandoned Tube tunnels. And in all of that, we get a (nicely revealed) better understanding of how the Doctor thinks about himself and what he does.

So it was exciting, informing, funny and creepy. What more could one ask (unless you're TEIN) from an episode of Doctor Who?

** - Though on thinking about it, I'd have liked the "nasty" Doctor to have replied, "It's called the Toodis. Are you 2-Dim to think of that, Doctor?"

*** - Vaguely because I can barely recall that series.

I really enjoyed this one! Best out of the lot so far for me. Really liked the idea and the 2D people were seriously creepy. Plus all the fun of the mini TARDIS.

Capaldi said in an interview that he was going to take his time finding the Doctor's new personality and what I like is that he really is finding it -- just who is the Doctor, both inside and out. Why that particular face at that particular time? He feels very harsh on himself in this series and I'm wondering if it's because of the Gallifrey mission hanging over him. He's been the last Time Lord for a long time, and if they all come back then he's probably got a fair few questions to answer to them.

Clara's hardly young anymore and the 'lover' aspects only usually come up as they are about to leave - it seems to be thought of as acceptable the women companions should choose to leave Who for love.

Missed the Adams family bit - But yes it isn't required if they want to maintain credibility. Factual TV reports would be OK though. Mixing far fetched fiction in far fetched fiction doesn't, work for me.

Wasn't that a Left-bridge-Stewart episode with the yellow maggoty things?

Well!

If we allow the shrinking Tardis and it's ability to be overcome by a two dimensional universe which I had trouble with given that in a country full of blind people the one eyed man is king etc. Plus the one thing the Tardis is able to control it's own shell. So putting those to one side.

I thought passing the items through the door worked well (given the above). The items themselves were a bit dodgy though.

Not sure what was going on with the magic pass and the Auf Wiedersehen Pet guy that only saw a blank sheet (I think that's what he said) Anyway it didn't work for him. (bearing in mine the pass is daft anyway).

I thought the actual basic plot was at least original - well to me at least. The rotating images in the tunnel was a bit naff, but it was consistent with the plot idea. The painting that couldn't be restored was even a nice touch and well revealed by Clara. On the hole probably the best one of the series.

BUT>

I thought the shimmering carpet and floor surfaces was a bit jarring, although the actual death (Especially the WPC) was quite well interpreted.

We have a lot of introspection by Clara, as a result she becomes to understand the inner workings of Who's world. We have Clara running around saying she is Who. Is that a tester for the next Who being female. (As in Time Lords live twelve male Who's and then twelve females - twist) We have the reveal about Clara being a lying bitch about how Danny is OK although Who discovers Danny isn't. (Although I thought he was or gave the impression at least).

Then we have the obligatory ending scene of the mysterious woman. My son left the room in disgust saying:-

"Oh and the best piece of equipment in the known universe happens to be a computer tablet from Earth - circa 2015." Or words to that effect. Was that really product placement?

In conclusion - Acceptable.

Err..."What up bitch?" Really, Danny?

Actually: "I'm at our bench".

---

Tiny TARDIS was fun, the Boneless were a good monster, and the 3D effect was very well done and creepy, but I got easily distracted watching this one.

Actually: "I'm at our bench".

Was it really? I sure hope so. I heard it that way probably in part due to the fact that my closed captioning said that's what it was. It didn't seem like something Danny would say, so I hope it wasn't!

I should add that closed captioning definitely reported a couple of other things wrongly.

First of all, I really enjoyed this one. All the games with Mary Poppins bags, Addams family Ting etc were really back to form.
Also the idea of 2D people was good.

Ihave had a funny feeling about this for a while now.
Maybe it's just to because I've thought for some time that the Doctor should actually be a woman occasionally. (Not sur of the 12 on 12 off thing but never mind. It didn's seem to work that way with the timelord with the tatoo.)

But:
In the last series of Tom Baker, Peter Davison kept appearing. Not doing much but watching and talking occasionally to Adric.
When TB fell off the telescope dish, they all rushed down to see TB change to PD, and Adric mutters "Now I understand. The guardian was the doctoer all along." or some such twaddle. (I never liked Adric much)

Wot if the heaven woman is the next doctor getting ready.
This may imply a fairly short run for Capaldi, of course.

If not, could she be either the bad guardian who's come back. (Valentine Dial mkII)

Silly ideas, but never mind.

That's what it sounded like when I first watched it, and again when I went back to listen to it specifically. It definitely makes sense as: "I'm at our bench", seeing as he's sat on a bench. It's also something couples would do - have their own bench where they meet. On top of all that, aside from Danny never having come across as the sort of person to greet Clara with: "What up, bitch?", I can't see the Beeb letting any utterance make it into the final version, not at that time on a Saturday.

EDIT: I guess, as well, the fact that it's not really a common greeting in the UK is against it. Which might also say something interesting about the closed captioning folks in the US.

I heard "I'm at our bench" too. And definitely can't imagine a BBC programme that's supposed to be for kids having that particular greeting!

I can think of all kinds of interesting things that I might say about the closed captioning folks in the US. :D Actually, though, the captioning on the show in general is pretty good. This is surprising to me, because I've seen the job they do on the news for years, working in casinos where we have the TV on but not the sound, and I've always been amazed that the deaf don't have a better lobbying effort than that. I'd expect it to be legally required that captioning bear some resemblance to what's actually being said.

I heard "I'm at our bench" too.

In the interests of, er, Science, I turned the iPlayer subtitles on. None of us were actually right! :p Close, though:

Same over here, too. Some of the things the subtitles come out with are crazy. If YouTube can do a better job with sound recognition, why can't the companies that actually provide the service?

Wait a minute. I didn't even have that scene. It was just a voice in Clara's phone as she was swinging the chair thing. I might have been able to pick out the words, if I'd seen Danny saying them, and sitting on a bench!
