Fantasy novel - girl trapped in village

A peasant girl is trapped in a village. Every time she tries to leave, a magical creature (possibly a spirit or a dragon of some kind) prevents her from doing so, possibly for her own good. A man comes to the village and she wants to leave with him.

Beyond that, the book is long, is by a woman and may have been written fairly recently. Has anyone got any thought as to what this might be? (It's not The Prisoner, by the way!)

I don't think it's that. It was definitely fantasy. I think the girl was called Jen or Jenny.

It sounds like 'A Turn of Light" by Julie Czerneda. The main character is Jenn Nalynn and she can't leave the valley due to her special abilities that keep the balance between worlds.

The sequel will be coming out in Nov. "A Play of Shadow"

It definitely is! A fairly recent novel, and one I actually recognized.

I'm sure of it now. I have acquired a copy and will read it, as the premise is interesting. 70 pages in and it's not much like anything I've read before. It's got a strange mix of unusual, slightly wild ideas and a lot of sentimentality. Thanks!

I picked it up as a lark (ebook) and it was my best surprise almost of the year. I really enjoyed it.
