Greetings friends.
This is a fantasy book, actually the first fantasy/sci-fi book I have ever read (the 2nd one was the LOTR trilogy, and the third Eon by G. Bear) at the age of 10. That was exactly 20 years ago. Since it was translated from the original (English for sure) the date of publication should have been somewhere in the 80's or 70's. I remember the first two chapters and the cover. Unfortunately I never finished it and have been looking to do that ever since. If you guys can't help I don't know who can. ^^
Cover: A wizard was shown dressed in black robes, the style was something like Frank Frazzeta's work. But it wasn't the Wizard of Earthsea (had a similar cover). The wizard was standing on the right side while a horde of demons and similar hell spawned creatures were coming against him from the left. He held a staff in his hand and there was fire beneath and a bit around them as well. He was clearly holding them at a distance. The perspective was pretty simple and clear as if you were viewing them as actors in a play - the details were all in the horizontal not the vertical dimension.
The first two chapters : I cannot remember the first one well, but I remember that every chapter had a Illuminated letter, a graphic more than a letter, with which it began its sentence and it wasn't very big but was detailed. The 2nd chapter dealt with the young and talented wizard entering into a temple of a religious order in which a similarly young priestess held watch over a certain object of power (cannot remember what exactly, perhaps an orb) which the wizard came to steal. I remember that she felt his presence (as a rise in magical power) but he managed to conceal himself in a way (or something like that).
Unfortunately that is all I remember. :')
I tried looking through all the fantasy literature published in the 80's on wiki and even 70's I believe but to no avail. If you guys could help I would be most thankful.
Yours sincerely
