What are you working on right now?

Doubt I'll watch it then.

Makes me want to put together a book of 100 word and 1K-5k shorts in many SF-F genres and have a go at it!
I can learn smoke and mirror marketing...:sneaky: (coming from a business major with a science/medical background)
Frankenstein your work on Amazon...It's alive!!!

But then...

I was always told short stories don't sell. Didn't stop Neil Gaiman. Maybe I'll touch up my old assassin trilogy and add another couple, see if I can't sell a handful :D

Or even just put together all my flash fiction. I've got some weird stuff lying around...

There's more to marketing than just marketing. Parts of it are ok. I write a regular newsletter and I enjoy doing that. I enjoy participating in the three forums that I'm in. Facebook groups are noisier and less interesting, but all these venues of this in common: they are communities of readers and writers. I'm with my tribe. And, it turns out, it's the modern equivalent--or at least necessary supplement to--traditional networking, a vital part of marketing.

I don't mind writing copy. It's difficult, since it isn't writing fiction, but I've come to see how it helps me think more clearly about my stories, because it forces me to think more concisely about them. And writing copy, of course, is also a vital part of marketing.

Advertising is my bugaboo. It's figuring out Amazon keywords and bids and strategies. It's currying through the various promo sites to figure out what to place when. And I haven't even touched FB advertising. And it's having to put out money for each, realizing that it's not a matter of figuring out what is going to make money, but which will be the best way to lose some. It has nothing to do with writing (whereas the other two above do) and no one has any really reliable advice except to try this and try that and there are too many variables to know for sure.

It's like I walk into a casino every two or three years, have to decide at which games to put down money, the games available keep shifting, and no one except the House knows all the rules. All you really know is that some walk out winners and some walk out broke.

So yeah, that part is something less than fun. Not depressing, just disheartening.

Today, after WEEKS of not even picking up a pencil, I finally got fed up with myself not doing any drawing because I didn't think it was fun any more and flipped through a couple of old notebooks, found a couple of old scripts I hadn't worked up which I thought were actually quite funny, and started working up a couple of characters from the thumbnailed script... Five hours later. I've nearly finished the page and am colouring. How could I have forgotten how much I enjoy doing this? It's beyond me.

Congratulations! I'm happy for you. I know what it's like gathering the motivation just to get started, LOL. Hopefully I can apply that same spirit to some incomplete short stories I have lying around...

It’s been a bit of a slog the last couple months, but I got just over 500 words tonight and am half-way through chapter two of my novel draft rewrite. Feels good as the story is in there just pounding on the walls of my brain to get out and it’s very difficult to find the time right now.

Got 2k on my 1st chapter done (a month ago) and as I went back to proofread it, it read like a storyised movie script. I'm one of those that think visually. It makes sense to me! But it is not story telling. So, I am going back and adding more descriptions, character thoughts and behaviors, emotions too. Working on improving the dialogs as well. Overall, a good first go at it!

So, after reading some of the other posts around chronicles, I am going to approach my writing in a different view. Just write the chapter and not worry about it and the go back and add/refine the writing as well as refining the flow and such. I have been getting caught-up in detail and losing my view of the story.

And here it is - after spending several hours stuck in"five pixels to the left... four pixels to the right... no... up one... which yellow IS funnier...?"" micro tweaking hell.

I guess you've already corrected it, because I couldn't find it.

Great work BTW.

Actually there are two and I didn't get it corrected. Very very minor but (American) comic book grammar has it that you only use a crossed letter I for the personal pronoun or an initial letter in something like FBI. otherwise you should use an uncrossed letter I. Like I said very very minor.

Bringing more attention to my MC as far as emotion/thoughts, view description and dialog goes in the 1t chapter of my book.
Between doing the 75- and 100-word contests and reviewing the Critiques posts, I am learning the needed value of all of these.
Ah, the crash course in novel writing!

Back writing 'properly' thanks to quarantining from a second bout of Covid. It's swapping from first person to omniscient and back, and forwards and backwards in time and space, which feels right. Plan is to narrate it when it's done -just published my first book on Audible and I liked the process. Listening back with an extra year or so of practice on the clock is showing the thing up in a whole new light '...that bit's weak, needs more exposition there, too slow'. That's progress anyway. I wouldn't have rewritten any of it though; ya learn as ya go. A (properly published) writer said to me that the more experienced ya get with writing, the more you will want to rewrite it. Which is the case with the current stuff, so not to jinx it but am back on the SF wagon again.

Phew, just finished the third Earthwyrms book, Path of the Sun Horse. (Well, "finished" apart from months of picking at it.)

So far the word counts have almost exactly matched those of the Harry Potter series. This bodes very ill for book 5...

I recently finished the third draft of my first proper novel, Nightblood (title might change if I think of anything better), which came in at just under 77,000 words. And am now currently five chapters into the next book in the series, currently have no title for that as of yet.

I'm trying to write the second draft of my story but I've been looking at what direction I want it to go in more too. Hopefully I'll have more of a certain direction by the end of this draft. I think I take a similar approach to @THX1138 in that I just try to write scenes and go over them later on. I've been trying to make more professional looking art though so I've been working on that a lot too. I was looking through an old book and decided to draw out some ideas for stories because I used to love doing that.

So, one thing that I have noticed in writing my posts is that I am not writing the way that I would talk, if you know what I mean.
Looking back at most of my posts I sound more like a flamboyant scholarly buffoon! That doesn't work at all, especially here on Chronicles.
So being a tiny writer in a field of giants, I'm going to keep working on writing my posts the way I would talk face to face, or not post at all. (Which is a lot more polite and concerning than I tend to post. :sneaky:) And work on my typing seed and accuracy too!
