Story about mutations caused by virus from space

Story centers around individual trying to locate why humans are mutating. Group finds meteorite crash site and individual that located meteor and cut open, releasing a virus which mutates humans. Meteorite has warnings printed on it, but we're ignored by Finder. Infected persons are driven to touch the uninflected thus passing on the virus. Virus causes Changes in human physical abilities and appearance.

Is it the Wild Cards series by George R R Martin and many other writers?

To the best of my recollection it was a one book novel, but I will check your suggestion thanks!

I checked out your suggestion of "The Wild Cards" and it does not fit. The premise is similar but the story that I am trying to locate was much more of a dark theme. End of everything, the virus changing man without any control, humanities' end. The story flips to a thoughtful end when the main character succumbs to the virus and looks at the end of humanity as a beginning of a new strain I humanity.
