... Then would a fox fall in love with a doe?

Let me explain a little bit first. Basically, this idea of mine takes place on another world entirely, and revolves around the love affair between a vulpine* soldier and a cervine* assassin. I've already got a basic idea of where I want to go with this (cue ending of Romeo and Juliet!), but the part that is making my mind run the gantlet is how the two of them meet in the first place!

*These two are anthropomorphic animals, by the way.... Think furry!

At the Oktober Deer Festival?

Presumably, they're in combat against each other, so one gets injured and is found by the other? Or they just fight, look into each others eyes, and frenzied kissing ensues. Or the fox eats the deers mother etc etc

I am forcing myself through a series where all the nobility are werebeasts of some kind or another. and I confess it does bother me some that the base haterd between cats and dogs is addressed in a war between lion and wolf both (incorrectly imo) citing the old hatered for their stubborn fude. but both love a fox girl without addressing the place in natuer for any of the other characters.

so if your addressing the natural order, then be sure to address it.

i dont see much conflict between fox and doe. foxes are known throughout mythology and history for being clever, so he could be quick witted and glib-tounged, captivating her pure and innocent heart with honeyed words as he rescues her from a snare or warning her of approching danger with a daring promise to hold it off.

@Hope: As much as your idea appeals to me, the doe in this story isn't defenseless! Although, that may give me some other ideas....

in romeo and juliet, romeos gang crashed a big masquerade celebration held in enemy territory... they did it even though if they did they could be killed. just for the adrenaline rush of breaking the rules..
sometimes i think that romeo was after juliet because of the challenge she represented as much as anything.
if they were animalistic, would there be a neutral ground where both groups visit a sort of animal switzerland like a bar or market or watering hole ...

She was probably hired to assassinate someone whom he was tasked with protecting. They had to get to know how each other's minds worked, in the course of this diplomatic dance, and in the climactic moment when either he took her down or she took him down, they fell in love.

You could pick up *Saga*, which is a comic/graphic series out with similar ideas of 2 different species having a relationship (one is a prisoner, the other their guard). Warning, it IS VERY ADDICTIVE. But a nice narrative for a love affair if you want to see how it's done well.

Hmm... I may have to check that series out, Aleph. I probably do need to brush up on how love affairs work, but I'm concerned with how they meet at the moment. Still, I appreciate the comment.

You know, its only in books that people met in meaningful ways.

I been thinking about this and am wondering if they couldnt just bump into each other occasionally before actually meeting.
as readers we would pick up on the significance of the fact that we are being told about incidental meetings between these characters, but it would allow them to form a relationship slowly without noticing.

we get the pleasure of suspended romance, and the characters arent forced to form a relationship on sight.

I was thinking perhaps they should meet as children, he saved her when she fell down a hole or perhaps she was attacked by a wolf or something (or maybe she saved him) and consequently they became best friends in secret and swore a pact to always protect one another.

Then as adults the deer is employed to assassinate someone the fox is protecting... or maybe she's paid to kill him, but doesn't know it's her best friend from forever ago. She holds the arrow poised to shoot, but notices his chewed ear from where the wolf bit him. Oh my goodness... its the fox she swore to never hurt. Confused she drops the bow and flees, but he runs after her. They have a scuffle (you need the physical contact) before it turns into something entirely else...ahem. :)

IDK Lauren. I never did get the fight-lovemaking evolution.
If I'm trying to claw your eyes out one minuet I'm sure as hell not going to be making out with you the next. (Unless I was possessed when I was trying to claw your eyes out, and even then, I'd need a few to cry about it and blather my apologies, and be verbally grateful for being saved before any sort of physical contact of a romantic nature would occur to me.)

I see that it works for some, so I cant knock it too hard.
But its one of those things that has never worked for me.
