Epic Games, the makers of Gears of War and Unreal Tournament, has confirmed its next first-person shooter project, in conjunction with People Can Fly (of Painkiller fame).

Bulletstorm will be published by EA, and will employ the latest Unreal Engine 3 on the graphics front.

The game tells the story of a futuristic confederation which is protected by a crack squad of mercenaries known as Dead Echo.

Two members of Dead Echo, Grayson Hunt and Ishi Sato, learn they’ve been working for the wrong side, and are subsequently betrayed by their commander and exiled to the other side of the galaxy.

The pair end up on a rather nasty planet which is populated by masses of mutants and flesh-eating thugs, where their death is, of course, certain.

Though not quite as certain as if said commander had just immediately shot them both in the head.

Anyhow, against all odds and in a hail of bullets, the challenge is to get Hunt and Sato off the planet, and then go after some good old fashioned revenge.

The player controls Hunt, complete with his “outrageously large” gun (to go with his outrageously roomy underpants, probably).

Bulletstorm uses a system dubbed “skillshots”, which rewards the player for killing in creative ways.

The more difficult the shot – a head-shot performed while somersaulting through the air, or something along those lines – the more points scored. Those points can then be used to upgrade your character and unlock new weapons. Outrageously larger ones.

Multiplayer in this game should definitely be different, given that players will not only be trying to kill each other, but will be doing so in the most showy way possible to gain the maximum credit.

Bulletstorm is slated for release some time in 2011, although as ever with these early guesstimates, it could well slide further than that.
