Patrick Stewart, who played Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, has been knighted.

And about time too. Stewart, who brought a presence to the small screen that only a trained Shakespearean actor could, also played Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films.

He nearly didn’t play Picard in Star Trek, mind you, as he was apparently initially considered for the role of Data. What a very different TNG that would have been…

According to the BBC, he called the knighthood an “unlooked for honour”.

He also attributed his success to the English teacher who first encouraged him to act.

Whether upon approaching the Queen to receive his knighthood, he uttered the immortal words “Make it so” seems unlikely. And she doubtless wouldn’t have got it, even if he had.

Sir Patrick will turn 70 next month.
