Bigpoint has opened the airlock on its massively multiplayer Battlestar Galactica Online.

The browser-based MMOG is based on the TV series as screened by Syfy, and is free to play, so you won’t lose anything by giving it a whirl.

Bigpoint boasts that the game is bedecked with high quality 3D graphics, and blends tactical space combat, exploration and mission-based gameplay.

Players can choose to be human or Cylon, progressing and unlocking new skills and ships, the latter of which can be customised with different weapons, engines, computers, mining equipment and so forth.

Apparently assets from the TV production have been ported across to make the game seem more authentic, with ships modelled on schematics provided by the show’s creators. The original score is also included in-game.

David Eick, Executive Producer of Battlestar Galactica, enthused: “Bigpoint has successfully embraced the spirit of Battlestar Galactica’s aggressive ship design, tactile physics, and its signature, vérité-style combat aesthetic, and taken it all to an entirely new level.”

“Playing this game is like watching the most highly-adrenalized, nail-biting episodes of the series while chewing on a hunk of uranium. I highly recommend it – just make sure you don’t have anything else to do for a few days…”

That’s certainly different from your average press release soundbite. Just don’t chew on too much uranium, kids, it’s not good for your teeth.

Hyperspace on over to the website for a slice of the action.
