There has been quite a bit of controversy regarding Ridley Scott’s Prometheus.

At first it was supposedly a prequel to Alien, then we discovered that no, actually it wasn’t that, and it emerged that the film had its own mythology, being more standalone in format.

But as more details have slowly emerged, the connection to Alien has seemed stronger, and indeed the release of an unofficial synopsis last week set the sci-fi community aflame.

This drew a very direct connection and gave away lots of spoiler-type information which we won’t spill here because, well, we don’t want to spoil anything for anyone. Of course, this could have all been made up – and that’s what Fox has come forward to say with the official release of its own synopsis.

Well, we say synopsis, but all Fox has really laid down is the very bare bones of the gist of the story like so: “Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe.”

“The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”

So no, that doesn’t give much away apart from the the cast being stranded on a distant planet, really. Fox reps denied that the unofficial synopsis had any truth to it, and said that it was in fact miles off the true storyline – although what was revealed by Fox here could still technically fit with that unofficial version.

Whether this is damage control after someone leaked or guessed correctly, we don’t know, but we guess Fox had to react given the amount of fans this stirred up.

Prometheus is due to hit cinema screens in a year’s time.
