We’ve discussed reboots a fair few times here on SFF Chronicles – if you can’t think of an original idea, then resurrect an old classic which was popular back in its day.

It’s guaranteed bums on cinema seats in these recession plagued days, or so film studio execs seem to think. It’s also a lot easier on the brain than trying to come up with a brilliant new flick.

Anyway, the latest oldie but goldie to be a candidate for the resurrection wand is Blade Runner.

Much to the chagrin of many avid Runner fans, of course, who think the classic should be left well alone. Or more to the point – even though this won’t be a remake, but a sequel (or possibly a prequel) – they’re pretty convinced it’s bound to be a travesty which won’t uphold the grittiness and character of the original.

And of course, they’re probably right. In fact news of the potential new Blade Runner emerged a few months back, but the spectre of the sequel has been raised again, after MTV spoke to Harrison Ford.

If he was on board, that would certainly give the film a lot more weight behind it, and perhaps even persuade some of the doubters that this is no bad thing.

At a Cowboys & Aliens press pow-wow, the MTV interviewer raised the subject, and whether Harrison would consider starring in a new Blade Runner movie.

Ford said: “I have no idea at this point. It’s very early on. I know some of the people involved.”

So while that’s pretty non-committal, it isn’t a no, and it would seem gears are certainly in motion with the project. Watch this space, as they say.
