Matt Smith has put a dampener on speculation that he might be leaving his role as Doctor Who soon. Well, to a point, anyway.

This comes after he made some comments to VH-1, in which he said he had another year of Who to film, and then he’d look towards the west and Hollywood for a potential movie career.

The next season being split across two years leads up to the 50th anniversary special in 2013, where previous incarnations of the Doctor are lined up to return (although Christopher Ecclestone is a definite no).

And that would make sense as being a departure point for Smith, with a regeneration and a new Doc emerging with a new gimmick or two (we won’t be too disheartened to see the back of the bow tie, to be honest).

At any rate, following his comments, Smith has now moved to at least mitigate some of the speculation that he’s imminently about to be off-ski.

According to STV, at the launch of the next series, he said he loved the role, and it wasn’t a part he’d want to give up “any time soon”.

Of course, that’s a pretty vague statement, and he also added he was taking it a year at a time with evaluating where he’s going in his career.

All of which doesn’t go too much against the idea that he might be leaving after the next (split) series. We shall have to see…

No doubt part of his concern is that if he stays for too long, he’ll be typecast as the eccentric old sonic screwdriver waver with a cheeky smile, and that won’t be a good thing career wise.

A shift to Hollywood would certainly make sense from that point of view.
