It’s coming like a Cacodemon hissing down a dark corridor, as we knew because John Carmack had already announced the release of the Doom 3 source code was due to happen this year.

And indeed now Rage has been unleashed on the world, to a slightly mixed reception, id Software’s founder Carmack has confirmed via his Twitter account that the Doom 3 source is imminent.

He tweeted: “Doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release.”

What does that mean? Well, namely that indie developers and modders can get their hands on the innards of the code, and hopefully concoct some new Doom based goodies.

Goodies that perhaps don’t rely on pitch black corridors and the constant switching in and out of your torch.

Although we must admit, we rather enjoyed the challenge and atmosphere Doom 3 brought with its overly dark theme. And you could always use the light of an imp’s fireball to shoot by.

Back when it was published in 2004, Doom 3 was the game you had to buy a new rig for in order to experience the new level of details the visuals provided.

Which was perhaps why some folks were so peeved that it was so dark everywhere, making seeing those shiny new environments more difficult.

Even so, it was a solid release, and the more disappointing facet for us was the continued reliance on the old ‘find the red key for the red door’ recipe from the original Doom.

Nostalgia aside, it should be interesting to see what the community does when they’re granted access to this code.
