So the other day I came across 'Turn Coat', but I didn't buy it because I didn't know if I should read it because I haven't read any of the previous books. Does reading order matter when it comes to Dresden, or can I read the books on their own/out of order?

I'd say they are best read in order due to ongoing sub-plots and such.

Jim says they're each meant to be contained stories - 'case books' - and you can read them out of order (it's why you get some weird repetitive descriptions of things in some of the books).

I'm a stickler, so I read them in order.

And then, when one of the books was coming up, I read them in *reverse* order... and *that* was fun. Picked up on LOTS of things that way. =)

Oh in order, my OCD is twitching at the thought of reading em out of order!:D;)

LOL

I don't know if I could pick up one randomly from the 15 and read it, then grab another one, etc. But I can start at book 1 and read through, or start at 15 and read the other way w/ no issues. =)

Recently started reading Jim Butcher, picked up books 2, 3, 4 & 6 in a bargain book shop. Guilty of reading them before I got book 1.

Now got them all including Codex Alera so I will read them in order.
