The book I'm looking for is about a guy travelling on his battle elk thru strange lands and meeting lots of evil forces.

Most battles he is engaged in during his long journey are mental, so he has to improve his mental skills to survive.

Most impressive enemies he managed to overcome were:

- a dark figure on a boat with extremely evil mind power;
- a "house" consisting of lots of minds and living in some cavern - maybe the most dangerous enemy;
- a large hord of creatures capable of mind-control;

His best trick was to set the hord of mind-controlling creatures at that "house", so that he had a chance to escape both, while they were stuck trying to overpower each other.

I cannot remember the author, but the title was something like "Dave's pilgrimage" or "David's journey" or something like that.

The book was paperback and was published before the 90's (maybe long before).

Please help

This is *Hiero's Journey* by Sterling Lanier.

You're very close on the details -- this books starts out in a post-apocalyptic North America (Canada) where species have been mutated -- so Hiero rides a moose and is accompanied by an intelligent bear.

There was a sequel -- *The Unforsaken Hiero*.
