I have a story (and I think it's pretty good) that I want to shop to fiction magazines when it's completed. It's military SF that takes place in a civil war type setting; as such, it's pretty dark but isn't overly gory or splatterpornish. There is plenty of swearing, though.

Does anyone know what some good outlets for that kind of thing would be?

If its a good story and SF most of the SF magazines will not object to military SF as far I know.
So Analog, Asimovs, F&SF, Interzone are possibles. You also have Lightspeed, SF Horizons to go at. Look at the Anthology calls on Ralan.com as well. Good luck.

Thanks. Yeah, I think it's going to pretty good when revised, but there isn't a whole lot of science/technology in it (so probably not good for Analog) and it feels a bit specific for Lightspeed. And I'd need to send it to places that are comfortable with swearing and a fairly high level of violence (though not gratuitous). F&SF is probably going to be the first outlet I try. Interzone would be a great place, but I understand they don't do electronic submissions and I'm not in the UK.

Yes you have to post MSS to Interzone but no need for SAE's from abroad. They will reply by E mail. Make sure the cover letter and mss include an e mail and your overseas address.

I don't think Analog needs a lot of science and tech as long as the story is SF, not fantasy. Implicit science and tech is OK whereas explicit can make a story obsolete very quickly.
