Book Four - A Game of Battleships

Right then. Having spoken to the publishers, the situation seems to be this:

The books have gone to Waterstones' central hub. From there, they will be available to order, and if you've got them on order, the should have gone out. Apparently, each individual shop is able to choose which books it has on sale, so it may be the case that they've decided not to have it on sale in the shop. That said, it should still be available to order and ought to have been ordered in if you did place an order.

As for Smiths, they've never really stocked any of my books as I'm too obscure. However, there's no reason for them to be saying that, as it ought to be available to order. (Although I'm not totally surprised, to be honest).

At the moment, I can't think of much more than that, but I will nudge people to get on with it.

I looked on the Waterstones website and while your book is there, its page hasn't got the reserve & collect button, suggesting that they're not stocking** it in their shops at the moment :)mad:). Sheer idiocy on their part, really.

If I'd realised that they were going to be so stupid, I'd have put in an advance order. :( (But I'm convinced the book is worth the wait. :))

** - Quote from the Reserve & Collect main page: "If it is in stock in at least one of our shops there will be a Reserve & Collect button on the right hand side of the page. "

I wasn't blaming you. Waterstones told me today that none of their Scottish branches has it, and if I order it up, it could take up to three weeks. (The assistant actually told me I'd be better off to try Amazon - I think I will).

It's annoying when I just wanted to walk into a local bookshop, hand over my hard-earned cash, and walk out with it in my sweaty, little mitts. How are we to support local retailers if they can't sell us what we want ?

Don't worry, I didn't think you were. I suppose it's that ability to get hold of things quickly which has made Amazon so strong. I know what you mean about local shops - I was slightly appalled to catch myself thinking of a branch of Waterstones as my local bookshop recently.

We only have Waterstones, The Works (if they saw Science-Fiction, they'd eat it), and WH Smith (great for newspapers and office supplies, lousy for books).

If it weren't for the local Oxfam (plug, plug) specialising in second-hand books and music, Perth would be a desert.

Finished mine (had a lot of moral fibre made by the wife to help) and thought it was really good...lots of subtle references to other stuff, which made me laugh.

Tom Perdu? lol

Susan sounds a lot like my boss actually...

Top Stuff. I was beginning to wonder...

Book ordered from Amazon, but when is the Audiobook version due?

K.

HAHA I HAVE IT AND IT IS MINE and all because I grumbled at them at their lack of decent books *evil grin* and so far I am amused and loving it (and that cover just looks amazing) I shall be reading it "inbetween" (cough instead of cough) my course books :p

A good news, bad news story.

I finally went down to the local Waterstones to buy (or, if necessary, order) the book.

"We sold the last one on Friday," the assistant said.

"Can I order one, then?" I asked.

"We've already ordered four more. I'll reserve one of them for you. They should be in soon; perhaps tomorrow."

So while I'll probably have to wait until the weekend :)() to get my hands on a copy, it does show they're moving off the shelves. :)

Here I go, late to the party as usual.

I was very excited to find that Toby has written another Space Captain Smith book. My copy should arrive very soon!
:)

Toby: I was pleased to hear that you liked the audiobooks. Narrators don't often get much feedback from authors... well, as most of the authors whose works I record have been dead for more than 70 years any author feedback is pretty unusual for me (and much appreciated)!

Although Iambik are officially no longer handling fiction, I would be more than willing to record the new book if you and the nice folks at Mymirdon would like it.

Hello Clive!

Thanks for getting in touch. I'm not sure if you can PM me on this board yet (I think you need a certain number of posts - probably 30 or so) but it's good to hear from you. I liked the readings of the other books very much.

I'll drop Myrmidon a line. The current plan is to write two more Smith books, and release one next year... but current plans do have a habit of not staying put!

You're right - I need 10 posts before I can PM anyone.

Unfortunately I couldn't get the email link to work on your webpage.

But...

If you want to get in touch there is a "burner" email link under the "Get The Book" tab of my webpage at www(dot)thehotairballoonbook(dot)com

Click on that and it will be forwarded to my real inbox.

Clive
