The edge of the world. Yes, really.
This isn't a news item but, as we all know, the world is in a bit of a state.

Here's a place for posting and viewing statistics demonstrating what a state the world is in.

Firstly, a general overview:

(watch the numbers grow for population, production of stuff, forest loss and desertification, etc)
 
Best bit was noticing that 'People with no safe water source' is going down
Also when I read 'Land lost to soil erosion this year (ha)' I thought the author was laughing at it. :)

I like that too, but it's going down at about one person per second, which works out around two million per month. Now divide the 790 million by two million and see how many more months we have to watch that number slowly ticking down. Meanwhile, deaths from water-related diseases is slowly ticking up....
 
Some world statistics are more useful than others, but still worth looking at
