Stephen Baxter and Russian Meteors

Stephen Baxter has just sent me through a link to the following article in the New York Times, in which he and others discuss the recent meteor strike in Russia. He uses the opportunity to name-check the BSFA (of which he is the president and I'm the chairman).

Actually the major thing I can't figure is why the Conspiracy nuts aren't going crazy already. These guys don't believe that the sun coming up and it becoming light outside isn't part of some kind of plot yet they think these two events are just coincidence?

Yet they seem to be, best observation so far is indicating that the meteor and the Near Earth Object have no observable connection, though I think the possiblilty that one was a fragment of the other has not been totally ruled out yet.

Yes it has been ruled out I think; the two approached Earth from totally different directions. They cannot have had anything to do with each other.
