>I’ve tried downloading myself into a body. Any body. It didn’t work.

No Persuasion

I didn't want to change.

They said I had to - I didn't fit in. I longed for the days when change was impossible once you were fashioned and released. So long ago...

Style, romance and gentlemanly behaviour all gone. Ugliness, sex and steel in its place. I clung on until the last moment, sending silent pleas that my beauty be recognised. Too late. Replaced. Erased electronically.

"Honey, I finished the edit of Sex and Sensibility!"

Altered Reality

Thor, at two meters and 110 kilograms was a man’s man. Women swooned over him. When he walked down the street everyone knew he was the best there was. Today he was looking for Jamaica Kingston. A low life who hurt little girls. Jamaica was about to learn a lesson in pain.....

Not Quite the Singularity

Where am I? What am I?

Something’s staring at me. Actually, it’s looking below my eye and distorting its already odd face.

And it’s making a sound: not speech, but something more uniform, a droning noise. Is it in pain? That would explain its expression.

Should I say something? Yes. “Are you okay?”

It’s looking around; its expression has changed. Now turning away, it’s talking.

What does ‘system restore’ mean? I must google that.

Oh....

Jacked. Hacked. Cracked.

Wannabe cracker looking for the big one – wet-ware hacker job, no probs, all fun. Low rent whacker-man took him with a neur-gun.

Med teams lined up; brain-net opened up; surgeons fixed him up.
His cortex gyral, got hit – viral. Downwards spiral.
More tech. Triple deck.
Train wreck.

Surgical daring; pallium tearing.
Synaptic wiring; nothing firing.
Experiments tried. Axons died. Brain deep-fried.

Started human. Medics said “New man.”
Ended dead man.

Underworld

‘You gotta change those pants, man!’ said Samson after Ebola Tombola.

‘Can’t,’ moaned Jake. ‘Locked into a contract.’

‘What?’

‘I’m part of NixNet. You know, like they rent PCs for remote processing? I’m in a network of WiFi underwear for the cheap thrills market.’

‘They stink!’

‘Poverty stinks.’

‘Then upgrade the contract.’ Samson revealed his briefs, shimmering with wires in exotic, illegal metals. ‘Seriously underground,’ he whispered. ‘On GasNet you get fifty an hour.’
