Hi Guys
New to this forum, in fact any SF forums.

IMB is the only SF I read (read em all more than once) and think it about time I broadened my horizons, can anyone reccommend some other authors who are on a par with IMB particularly on the tech level? or do I ask too much?

Thanks in advance

I'm a big fan of Iain M Banks, I haven't found anything exactly like him, but a couple of other modern sci-fi writers that I enjoyed were/are

Peter F Hamilton
Neil Asher

I'm sure the guys/gals here can recommend plenty more.

Not exactly the same, but you might try Alastair Reynolds or Ken MacLeod. Both are hard sf and space opera writers. Neil Asher was also on my recommendation list, but Moonbat got in first.

Also Gary Gibson and Michael Cobley. Both write wide-screen space opera, like Banks.

There is no one quite like Banks. I will second Reynolds and Asher.

I haven't read any Asher yet, and have to say Reynolds is amateur hour compared to Banks.

Like others have said, there is only one Iain M Banks.

Hmmm not sure I agree with the statement about AR being amateur hour...if nothing else his space battles use real world physics for the ships, whereas as IMB has his ships do whatever his imagination thought of.

I would agree that IMB is out there on his own, and although Ken MacLeod and he were great friends, their books are quite different - MacLeod's books are generally a socialist rant from beginning to end...

Hmm, the post about springs novel is a bit anachronistic - as the post hoping it would happen is 20 months old, and springs novels are, well, being published actually...
