I watched it recently on Netflix, so now I understand the frustration with it getting cancelled. It's my new favorite TV show. Also watched Serenity.

I got the entire first series off Amazon for not very much. Don't think I paid more than a tenner and got Serenity for a couple of quid from there too.

I believe there is also a graphic novel which continues the story beyond the movie. Tragically I'm not much for that scene, but it might be of interest to you!

The first episode of Castle I ever saw was the one where he spoke Chinese.

With a nod to Shepherd Book...

I speak Chinese, Vince. I'm fair sure he hasn't spoken Chinese to anyone yet.

It's been twenty-two years since I spoke Mandarin on a daily basis... and I'm basically illiterate. And yet... the characters for meat, cow, mouth-water (I assume that means drooling), goat, my, god, large, holy, and the word to show possession (like an apostrophe s) all seem correct. As for the English sounds, I never studied Pinyin, Wade-Giles, nor any other phonetic system using English letters. I learned Bopomofo in Taiwan.

You know how Americans can mock non-native English speakers, well people of every language mock non-native speakers for horrible pronunciation. My pronunciation in 1992 was alright... certainly nothing to write home about. But just contiuing to speak their tongue, even when you're butchering it, shows people your're willing to respect their methods and not insist upon preferential treatment.

Watching Firefly, I could never make out more than a few phrases in Mandarin. First, this is because I'm not totally fluent. Second, it's because I'm rusty. And third, it's because the actors pronunciations are bad... and that's the joke I was looking for.

I grew up hearing my maternal grandfather's favorite phrase... gui erzi... or... gway ar dzuh... It means Son of a Turtle. This casts aspersions upon the virtue and morality of the recipient's mother while at the same time denying the virility of the recipient's father. Even with his education and refined upbringing, my grandfather (a physician) would use this vulgar term when driving or watching the news.

I rented it from Blockbuster;
...err, I think there is only one store left;
...and it may have been damaged in the "Captain Marvel" movie...

... the last that I heard Facebook had bought the streaming rights...

Enjoy!
