Hi, I read this SF book 'round 1955 (My first book), in Spanish though I'm sure it was translated from English, the action took place in Mars, the main character was a young male, going to college or military academy in Mars, he didn't get along with the administration of the college and decides to trek across Mars without regards of extreme temps and lack of atmosphere, I recall the fellow having to spend the night and killer temperature inside a martian gigantic cabbage that opened up layer by layer to allow him to crawl inside and spend the night in comfort!
Any help will be muchly appreciated :) .

That is definitely Robert A. Heinlein's Red Planet. The central characters are Jim Marlowe and his "pet," Willis.
