I read in the 70's probably, all I can remember was that a fleet of human ships returned to Earth to find it destroyed, decided to scatter and repopulate, the novel followed the various stories of the survivors. In one case the survivors made sure that their vessels self-destructed when captured (to notify others of their fate) and that in one case the captured human was killed by being trapped in an arena with a bunch of meat-eating grubs (I know ... ). I always thought that it was called the 'Star Kings' but all I find is the novel by Edmond Hamilton, and that's not it. Thanks for any help.

This probably isn't it (as I don't recall any grubs or "various" stories) but it initially made me think of Poul Anderson's After Doomsday, so I throw it out as a possibility.

-- Oh. "juvenile" hit my brain too late. I don't think the Anderson would be considered a juvenile. Never mind.
