Shortening the Working Day?

“Work is for the office,” said the salesman. “Home is for fun and play. Why else have dishwashers and microwaves.”

“And vacuum cleaners,” I said.

“Not with our carpets. They clean themselves. They love eating dirt.”

“And the cost?”

“Ten percent extra.”

“Let’s see your pattern book.”

A month later, every spill and crumb had soon vanished. And the carpet was so soft. Walking on it, I could almost feel my bare feet tingle....

Hell's Kitchen

One two three
Too late to flee
Four five six
From the witch's mix
Seven eight nine
On your flesh we'll dine

After that game we drove through the night. I had to protect Sarah.

New town, new school. New games.

But one day, again, the face in the mirror withered and grinned its toothy smile.

“Sarah, why don't you teach your new friends the game? Mommy is making you a really nice stew tonight.”

Creative Destruction

‘Do you remember,’ he looked intently at me, ‘playing when you were maybe three years old, and you changed the world for ever? Like, maybe, you squashed a bug?’

His fingers mimicked the crushing action.

Involuntarily, I nodded, although the ropes were tight and movement was hard.

‘Such a powerful feeling; it makes you want to do it again and again and again …’

I saw his smile as he repeated the phrase and then … nothing.

I stir from unconsciousness. I test my bonds, as always; they are inescapable – as always.

I check my left middle finger; the skin is knitted on the stump, red but intact. Several weeks, then.

I look at the board and pieces, understanding some, though much is still unknown. My opponent stirs now, eyes fearful, darting, confused. A newcomer. I will win, though I wonder what I will lose this time.

“Play,” he says, as always.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

If Nikki Brown tells you ‘girls just wanna have fun’ and invites you home from the pub, don’t go. She’ll strip. She’ll give you whisky then, as the valium that she put in your drink starts working, she’ll lead you to her bed. When you wake up, your wrists and ankles will be handcuffed and Nikki Brown will smile and say, “Time to play. Don’t look so worried. I’m not going to hurt you. Much.”
