Not all the details sound quite correct, but overall this sounds like some of Larry Niven's works in the "Known Space" series. See, for instance, "Becalmed in Hell":

I'm late to the party but I think you refer either to A Boy and His Tank (Leo Frankowski) or Fred Saberhagen's Berzerker series.
