Almost 50 years ago I read a book and would love to reread it now.

All I can remember about it is that it took place in the very near future after the discovery that there had been an advanced interplanetary human civilization on Venus, Earth, Mars, and a planet between Mars and Jupiter.

As the story continued, it became clear that an alien enemy destroyed this early civilization by exploding the planet between Mars and Jupiter, thinning the atmosphere of Mars, clouding the atmosphere of Venus, and causing the Earth to enter an ice age.

Only humans on Earth survived, but the human race was thrown back to a primitive state.

That's not much to go on, but does anyone remember the title of this book?

It could be "Inherit the Stars", the first book in James P. Hogans "Giants" series. Not quite 50 years ago (published in 1977) and the plot points don't quite match, but it sounds similar (and is a good series).

Available as a free download in multiple formats at Webscription.net:

No, it wasn't "Inherit The Stars", a terrific book and part of a great series.

The book I'm looking for was around in the early to mid 60's, well before James P Hogan created the Gentle Giants of Ganymede.

I wish I remembered more. Thanks, anyway.
