Middle-Eastern Fantasy Short Story Search

A fantasy short story apparently set a middle-eastern, medieval, Islamic world where the narrator has been time-traveling to and from other cities (Baghdad, Damascus etc) via a 'magic' network of shops set up by some mysterious merchants. I vaguely recall him describing a woman visiting her younger self with an item of jewelery in order to fool some thieves that the item was a common one.

Fairly recent I think...
 
That's Ted Chiang's The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate.

Well, that was driving me nuts. I vaguely remembered the author's name had something Asian about it and ended up going off looking at China Mieville stories to see if he were the author...
