need book title - alien abduction from central park

I am looking for a book I read many many years ago. It was about several people from various backgrounds that were abducted from central park and deposited on an alien planet to see how they cope. The book was written from the perspective of a character named "avery". Once the experiment was completed, the humans were given the option to return to earth or continue their life on the new planet. This was supposedly going to be made into a movie in the 70's???

Any help I could get on the name of this book or who the author was would be greatly appreciated!!
