nytimes.com — Can someone — let’s say Jack Vance — write about spaceships and monsters and alien civilizations and still be a great American writer?

Of course he can I have read less talented genre greats who became mainstream great American writers.

Vance can only get his due in the future as most great genre authors who become legends outside their genre its long after their lifetime.

If pulp crime authors get their due Vance really should get his. Only thing that can stop him is that he is too original for his own genres.
