space and time trucking

I think it's a series of 3 (maybe 4) published pre 1990's.

All known planets have been connected by a porthole system. These are primarily used by freight truckers (as in on the ground). At some point our main character gets into some paradoxical time travel, meets his girlfriend for the first time after the they have a baby.

There is some significants to the portholes themselves, and something about a little black cube that contains the entire universe... or something.

It's John DeChancie Skyway trilogy "Starrigger", "Red Limit Freeway" and "Paradox Alley" - about trucker, his intelligent truck (A.I. was his father IIRC) and portals (the closest one to earth was on Pluto, also IIRC)
