DUBLIN AUGUST 4 2004. With exactly one year to go to the opening ceremony of Interaction, the 2005 World Science Fiction Convention, the organiser of the James White Award announces that he is now accepting entries for the 2005 competition. The James White Award is an international short story competition, now in its fifth year, that commemorates one of Ireland's best-loved science fiction writers. The author of the winning story will be presented with the Award at a ceremony to take place during Interaction and will see their story published in Interzone, Europe's leading Science Fiction magazine.
"It is very appropriate that we present the fifth James White Award at Interaction, the 63rd World Science Fiction Convention, as James had many links with Worldcon and with Glasgow," said James Bacon, the Award organiser. "Not only did James attend many Worldcons during his career, including Intersection, the 53rd Worldcon, held in Glasgow in 1995, but he was Guest of Honour at the 54th Worldcon held in Los Angeles in 1996. James was also a frequent visitor to Glasgow attending many local conventions."
Commenting on the Award being presented at Worldcon, Interaction Co-Chair, Vincent Docherty said, "James was very supportive of every Worldcon held in the UK and we are delighted that Interaction will be the first World Science Fiction Convention to host the award ceremony. We are also pleased that one of our Guests of Honour Robert Sheckley has agreed to be on the judging panel."
Mr Bacon also announced that the arrangement whereby Interzone publishes the winning story each year has been renewed. "Interzone has been a staunch supporter of the Award since its inception and has provided a platform to showcase the new talent revealed by the James White Award. I am delighted that this relationship will continue and that Andy Cox, Interzone's editor has agreed to join the judging panel."
The competition is open to non-professional writers from all over the world who may submit up to four original science fiction or fantasy short stories of between 2000 and 4000 words each. The winning story will be selected by an international panel of judges and will be published in Interzone. In addition, the author will receive a trophy and a cash prize. Full details may be obtained from the competition website http://www.jameswhiteaward.com
The International panel of judges will be: Irish author, Michael Carroll; US Author and Interaction Guest of Honour, Robert Sheckley; Tor Books editor and James White's last editor Teresa Nielsen Hayden, Andy Cox editor of Interzone and one other to be announced at a later date.
