Voting is now underway in the Story South Million Writers Award to determine the best online short story published in 2006. Earlier, judges narrowed the field to ten. Catherynne Valente's "Urchins, While Swimming" was originally published in my magazine, Clarkesworld, and personally, I think it's the best of the bunch. I encourage you to check out the stories and vote now!

I'm a big fan of Catherynne's work, so I'm hoping that at the end of the month she ends up on the top of the heap and can claim the $300 prize. At present, she has a very good chance of doing so.

Thanks for alerting the rest of us to this, Neil. I might just take a look.

The voting has ended and the Story South Million Writers Award for best online fiction in 2006 is "Urchins, While Swimming" by Catherynne M. Valente. I'm very proud to have published this and even happier to see Catherynne get some deserved recognition for her shorter work. Earlier this year, she won the Tiptree Award for her book, The Orphan's Tales: In the Night Garden.
