I don't know whether this theory will prove to be correct or not, but I found it fascinating to read.

Though I know somewhat about Herschel, I'm not that knowledgeable; but what I do know tends to make me think he could very well have done it -- he was a very close observer, and remains one of the great luminaries of astronomy.
