Fantasy Series re bonding with birds

No this is not from Mercedes Lackey's 'Valdemar' series.

A series of three or four fantasy novels.
Certain people bond with birds. There is a heirarchy of the birds, the highest being a bond with an Eagle. This hasn't happened in a long time, but a young man bonds with an Eagle. There is a fight against evil (isn't there always?).

Any thoughts?

Unless I am much mistaken, you're thinking of The Lon Tobyn Chronicle by David B. Coe. The first book in the series is Children of Amarid.
