Didn't see that one. Hey, maybe it would be good to propose a "dream" cast. ;)

How's this: Ben Affleck for Kirk; Adrian Brodie for Spock; Dennis Quaid for McCoy; Jet Li for Sulu; Daniel Day-Lewis for Chekov (Now there's a guy who can do accents); Halle Berry for Uhuru; Cameron Diaz for Nurse Chappel and, hmmm, let's see...............Will Farrell for Scotty. Oops, better make it Simon Pegg after all.

On second thought, a cast of relative unknowns may be a good thing! However, I can still remember my outrage when I heard about the lame looking cast that David Lynch was putting together for the movie version of Dune. Unknowns except for Max Van Sydow, Silvana Mangano, Sting and Jose Ferrer (and the throw-away role they gave to Linda Hunt because of her Oscar). The other players have certainly gone on to make their marks in the industry (Brad Dourif, Richard Jordan, Kyle MacLachlan, Virginia Madsen, Jurgen Prochnow (who was an accomplished film actor even at that time), Patrick Stewart and Sean Young.

But even with a cast of blue-chip industry icons, the 1984 Dune would have been a bust (my opinion only, of course). A movie based on a well known story with well known characters will, ultimately, be only as good as the vision of it's creators allows it to be. Lynch put too much of himself into Dune. He might as well have been doing a remake of Eraserhead. Hopefully, Abrams will be properly inspired and appropriately respectful of Star Trek's long-established heritage.

Yelchin played Hank Azaria's son in the short lived but excellent drama "Huff".

I believe Pegg has been confirmed and in addition Eric Bana will be playing the main villian of the movie - a character called Nero, an interesting piece of casting there :)

They are mostly too old. Remember that this is set in the Academy. That's why you need young actors, and young actors lack experience and shelves of awards, it doesn't make them bad actors. And I wouldn't for one moment contemplate that their lower salaries had anything to do with the casting! :rolleyes:

Confirmed on IMDB that Simon Pegg is indeed playing Scotty.

There is a lot about this film that worries me. I am not one of these people who will refuse to go to see it because i disagree with the concept or casting. I will reserve judgement until I've seen the film. After watching Lost and MI:III, I trust that JJ will make an excellent job. I would of course prefer to see a film set in Star Trek's future as opposed to its past but...

And I knew that. That's why I put the little smiley in the text. ;) A cast of relative unknowns would really be best. But it still all gets down to how well the people putting the story together, i.e., writers, directors, producers do their jobs.

This is too funny. The recent rumors going around the the J.J. Abrams' movie has The Guardian in it (from "The City on the Edge of Forever") may, if true, herald a law suit I could actually get behind. Turns out, Paramount doesn't own the properties of that episode, outside the Star Trek regular stuff. Instead, it all belongs to Harlan Ellison, a man not exactly known for his love of Paramount. Ellison has posted on his blog that Paramount better be ready to pay him for his stuff, if the rumors are true:

Would someone go to that site, and suggest to those people there, that "City" and all its elements EXCEPT specific Star Trek characters, belong to Harlan Ellison-author of that much-lauded episode-by terms of the Separation of Rights clause of the Writers Guild's Minimum Basic Agreement (MBA), and if Mr. Abrams-with whom I'm currently on strike-or anyone else, at Paramount or elsewhere, thinks they're going to use MY creations-whether the City, the Guardians, Sister Edith Keeler, or any other elements CREATED BY HARLAN ELLISON...they had damned well better lose the unilateral arrogance, get in touch with me, or my agent, Marty Shapiro, and be prepared to pay for the privilege of mining the lode I own.

No, I see that clearly; there was a teaser trailer with 'Cloverfield'. From that, it doesn't look like a prequel, but more of another retconning re-imagining. It showed the Enterprise-1701D being built in a planetary environment that I would assume to be Earth.

The Enterprise was built when Kirk, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu and company were "still in diapers" - to use a phrase of Kirk's from 'Generations'. Only Scotty (just Graduated) and Spock might be old enough to be invited to see its launch. It had two 5-year missions before Kirk took over, with Spock on the second with Captain Pike, and Captain April before that.

And the Enterprise was launched from the San Francisco Yards which were in orbit around Earth.

What happened to the "We care about continuity" line that came from Paramount with Berman in charge?
 
Uh, did the wardrobe department forget to give Kirk a shirt to go over his black mock turtleneck? Really, it like the idea of a black uniform top to single out captaincy, but it would have worked better if the had put a starfleet insignia on it! I hope they don't change things just for the sake of changing them. Sure, a little revamping would be cool, and that bridge is awesome looking, it's just sooo different from the original, and it really is in your face with that mini-skirt to compare it with. Because of the rumors that this movie sucked so bad they had to re-edit it resulting in it being pushed back, I hope they can make it true to the original in story, at least. While my judgement will be patient for the film, I still think Matt Damon would be the perfect Kirk.

...and they probably re-designed sickbay, too. I know engineers, they love to change things.
 
Apart from the break with continuity that is so large that this must be a parallel universe?? That is still my biggest problem.

Well, (and I've only seen those trailers) it appears there is Sex, Car Chases, lots of explosions, mayhem and Shoot-Outs. Exactly like every other Hollywood Blockbuster. No doubt it will be very successful, but I prefer my Star Trek more cerebral, as it originally was. (Studio turned the concept down and told Roddenberry that it was too cerebral.)

I take it for granted that you may not agree with me, and that maybe Star Trek is ripe for modernising. It did after all, always have fisticuffs and martial arts. It did have the first inter-racial kiss, so I guess moving to the bedroom scenes is not such a jump after T'Pol. Maybe I'm just too old, but I just saw A Quantum of Solace too. A great action film, but it was not James Bond either. And I'm not alone in thinking that, many critics have said much the same.
 
The critics here say "more Bourne than Bond". I'm not a purist (I can hear you gasp) so I'm kinda looking forward to a re-imagining of Star Trek.

Haven't seen this one yet, but it is true, after having watched Casino Royale, that the new James Bond is completely re-invented. And maybe that will keep the series going. Certainly the old Bond had been beaten to death after Sean Connery decided to move on with his life.

Maybe it's time to reinvent StarTrek as well. The last couple of opuses weren't exactly ones for the time capsule.
