Fantasy Series

I read this series about 5 years ago and for the life of me cannot remember the entire series name, and unfortunately the words i do know in the title are so vague to look up im having trouble just surfing the internet to find it the words i do remember from the series title are "children of". The series consists of three books, though i dont think it has trilogy in the series title. Its based around a character named jared. They use magic through their staves which all have different colours i believe his was a green colour, they also all had bird familiars. They were battling against a group of people from another part of the world that used technology and had no magic so to speak but they impersonated these magic users and dressed up, but they all had red stones on their staves and all had mechanical raven familiars. Thats pretty detailed i think hehe hopefully someone can help me fill out the rest of the title and the authors name.
