Homophobia?

I believe Card is trying to remain relevant to current views and situations, but fails in a way. Just like X-Men is trying to play the racism theme with mutants, though something seems missing. If Card is conservative or something like that, I guess that would be normal.
 
Based on the Riot Act, it would be illegal in the UK for Card to air his homophobic views publicly. At the same time, I believe it's a human right for everyone to be allowed to engage in artistic pursuits and to be able to offer it for wider consumption. As long as Mr Card's artistic output avoids infringing the Riot Act, then I support his artistic rights. I watched the movie of Ender's Game and genuinely enjoyed some of its larger themes.
 
Um... not the Riot Act, which deals with ... um... riots. And homophobic utterances aren't illegal per se, but dependant on what is said, how and when uttered and to whom, with what intent and whether anyone present is, or may have been, offended. Admittedly, walking down the street muttering homophobic slogans is likely to get you arrested PDQ, if only for conduct likely to provoke a breach of the peace, but actually being charged and convicted of an offence which isn't overturned on appeal is another matter entirely.
 
I have joined the forum. My only complaint is that if you insist that you are still reading OSC after all those statements and that you did not think he meant hatred against gays, well, you are definitely wrong and you mean some enlightened or accused of hatred.

Well I guess if we threw out all the writers with questionable morals the book shelves would be pretty empty. I hate homophobia and reading this has diminished him in my eyes. But hey, the first book, at least was great.

I can never understand Sf authors who are right wing. Seems to me SF is about the future, and the idea that the future can be better which means better for everyone which means a sharing/just/fair society aka socialism. Look at Star Trek's vision of human society as the key example.

Dystopian visions of the future, by definition, paint tyrannical worlds where the right wing has run amok. EG The Hunger Games which is a clever satire on the present day. The exception might be 1984 which could be seen as a parody of Russian communism.

Just my thoughts, please no arguments, I gave up internet arguments for Lent.
 
I haven't read his work, but I understand his term in Ender's Game for the alien enemy is "buggers." If you know what that means in English slang ( buggery means sodomy, a perjorative term for anal sex, with bugger meaning sodomite and an old profane term for a homosexual man).

Card is on Quora. I once saw him post a comment "A civilization that doesn't care for and protect its young people doesn't deserve to be called civilized." A very lofty and profound little public statement there, for which he of course got many upvotes of support. I then replied to him personally, asking if that also applied to those gay teenagers and adolescents who suffer depression to the point of self-harm and suicide? He ignored my question. When I saw him comment a couple of other times, I repeated the question. He ignored it both those occasions, too.
IMO, he is a pretty pathetic human being.
