I've read this story some time ago. From what I can remember the story was about people living on a planet equipped with antiquated starships abandoned by a different race. These ships have pre-programmed travel plan, but nobody knows where the ship will go and whether it will return. People are being paid to man these ships and those who do return are greatly compensated.
Ring a bell, anyone?

Yes - this is definitely Gateway by Frederik Pohl. The sequels - 'Beyond the Blue Event Horizon' and 'Heechee Rendezvous' are also worth a look. Gateway itself is well worth reading again - an SF classic.

These are really great books. Some of Frederik Pohl's best!
