hey guys i seem to be creating similar stories everytime i try to write namely

a character with a specific duty or function etc. can't perform their function because of conflicting thoughts / psychological problems etc. they learn something and end up doing the opposite of their assigned duty function etc.

any thoughts on me increasing my originality

First, a standard character and limited storyline need not be a major short coming. Agatha Christie has been served handsomely through 80 novels and over a billion copies with just such an infliction.

Perhaps you can work them out of your system by evolving all these distressed characters into one person and a single story or series?

As for opening things up, there are no end of exercises you can try to make it easier:
Try writing character synopsis of somebody you see on the street or in the news, imagine what would upset their day. Put them in some other setting, or reverse their situation with another annonymous punter, work out what they might do and how things change.
Try the various challenges in the Workshop here.

Ultimately you need something to poke the imagination into gear and an idea to work with.
