Help remembering a old fantasy book

Hey all I ahve been trying to locate a book I read many years ago. It has to be about 15 years or more since I read it so details might be a bit fuzzy but here it goes....If i remember right there were three series in the book but the one I read had all three series in one book.It was based on "medivalish times"There were these huts that had food/clothing in them for the people to take. If there was a disagreement amoungst them they fought in a circle and only in the circle.It followed pretty much one person through out the series.Towards the end he discovers a mountain and finds that in this mountain was a group of modern day observers watch the population.No its not a star trek book Any ideas?

A classic

The first book focused on "Sos the Sword" (latterly the Rope) who discovered the mountain you're talking about
The second concerned "Var the Stick" & the third "Neq the Sword".
