let us explore how deep the connection goes; from the first film to the last.

in the matrix, there are a number of ways neo and smith mirror each other, each occurrence leading into the next.
  • the firm
both neo and smith work for the system. neo works in the building, as a software dev for ... erm... i fergot the name...

but smith works for the matrix, an agent of the system. this thought is further developed in
  • the subway
here neo and smith face-off "one"-on-one. here neo denies himself as thomas a. anderson and attempts an embrace of his "one"-etude. from the third film, we know this fight could never be won by either side because neither one was free of the restrictions and rules of the system. neo was not free at the moment, as thomas a. anderson was not yet fully "dead". he "won" by running away.
  • room 303
the infamous scene of the empty gun in the chest. interesting that smith's gun was a 9 round gun, he only fired 7 rounds before the agents all began firing and neo pausing the bullets in mid air.

how did he reload withour rezzing into someone else? hmmm.... he didnt have a second clip in the subway!

but as aside as that was, theres more.

at the moment keanu reeves died, it was thomas a. anderson who died permanently. in the subway, thomas a. anderson was shrugged off. denied. here he simply died. who was reborn, was neo. this made smith the odd one out, and let neo gain an easy victory over him as now the equation was once again unbalanced.

with smith "dead", the equation balances out, and the mirrors begin anew in the second film.

the matrix reloaded:

the mirrors are once again apparent and lead into each other. as neo grows, smith grows.

remember the bug that smith put in neo at the first film? here in the second, smith has a bug taken out of him. his earpiece. it was the control method of the matrix, over smith. the bug in neo was a symbol that he was still a member of the system. smith's earpiece is in effect, the same symbol.

neo's "upper hand" of having an insider in the matrix (the oracle) is semi-lost when neo copies himself onto bane. now each can know the outside (the other side) of their existences.

smith's desire to copy himself is mirrored by neo's passion for trinity. his "desire to copy" if you will.

notice each of the fight scenes. each one of them results in a "win" by running away. or flying away.

now for the third film: the matrix revolutions

here are the many twists and turns of the neo/smith connection.

the oracle becomes part with smith, allowing him vision. mirror this with neo's physical blindness, and what the oracle called "the gift of sight" whereby he could see past himself, and into the future.

the final fight: neo is but one person. smith has now taken control of the entire world. smith wants war, neo wants (as we find out) peace. with trinity dead, the smiths cannot copy themelves anymore. when the one dies, the smith dies. the reason: smith compied himself onto A DEAD PERSON. in this, he must die.

thnx all, the end :)
