This Season's "cliff hanger" -- BAD Writing! Bad Judgement!

I just can not get the ending of this Season's Stargate out of my mind.

Of ALL the possible ideas that The Producers and Script Writers could have come up with -- they HAD to depend on some silly nonsense of having Daniel captured by Drug lords/terrorists? I mean-- HUH!????

First OFF: When Daniel went off on his little Treasure Hunt -- wasn't he still working for the SCG? Did I MISS something while watching the show--? Did he mouth off to Hammond? Say-- don't WANT any military protection? NOPE-- just SEND ME off to that jungle alone-- LET me struggle -- LET me take the chance of coming into contact with Hostiles...in a country KNOWN for such things?

Soooooooo-- we, those of us who have a even moderate amount of thinking capacity -- aren't suppose to be screaming "CONTRIVED!!!" and moaning in agony-- over the plot line-- and for the embarrassment the ACTOR must be feeling?

For heavens sakes-- it isn't bad enough that in dozens of shows over the Seasons shown, Daniel is forever walking into trouble on far off planets-- then the writers try to pull some Indiana Jones marginal rip-off, and they make Daniel the Twit who gets "captured" yet again, right here on Earth. WHOA!!!

I stopped watching the second that scene flashed on the screen!

And add to that the INSULT and ANGER of realizing that our REAL soldiers are fighting and dying against the horrible threat of terrorism every day....and these...people on Stargate thought it was okay to use THAT TOPIC as an Episode device????

If the current writers have run out of good ideas-- then get rid of them-- and bring in some Fresh minds---there are hundreds and hundreds of good writers living in Los Angeles. But don't insult the FANS/Viewers with such pathetic Episodes.

This is ONE Stargate fan that will not be watching the Season opening -- in PROTEST of what has been done. And....since I was not much of a Daniel fan to begin with-- this little antic the writers created for his character has just -- well-- dropped him so far down the ranks for me.....if I had to choose between rescuing a Gao'uld larvae and Daniel.....too bad for Daniel.

You know what!!

You can't change how they did it, so why don't you just suck it up!!

I'm sick of people downng this new season of stargate, i think its one of the best seasons. Whoes with me?

I thought, and many others thought that the ending was good:rolly2:

Don't down the writers, their only doin their job:mad:

And I want to know why you think, the actor would be emabarasses?

I thought the Rules...

did not allow for nast respones?

However....my opinion is as valid as yours. The recent Season lacks strongly because it lacks RDA -- for those of us who prefer RDA and Christopher Judge --- in the shows.

And the Script writers make THOUSANDS of dollars per Episode -- so they shoud be expected to put everything they have into what they write.

PERIOD.

If they are stale....move them out and get FRESH minds.

And if the actor who portrays Daniel doesn't see what's wrong with agreeing to carrying out the 2 part SCRIPT/SHOW that has been filmed--- then I guess I'll leave that for him to come to terms with......

When he next encounters REAL Military forces.

For that matter -- the entire Stargate cast and crew have something to apologize for, in my estimation. It all comes down to....being accountable for the choices you make.....and not just cashing in on what's "curent" at the expense of other's feelings -- even if you are (and especially if you are) part of a hit TV series.

This isn't a nasty response, if anything it's as nasty as yours, as you stated m opinion is as valid as yours.

If it sounded nasty to you, sorry (i guess)

Would I be right in thinking you were not impressed, Goob'r55?

Your opinion is always valid here whether you like the episode or not, provided the discussion is kept civil. But please do not mix it up with the real world and troops. It is a totally different world (been there, got the tee-shirt).

Perhaps they have hit the buffers on this episode (I've not seen it) but it is bound to happen sooner or later, look at Star Trek. Left gaps in the story so large you can drive the corporation bus through them.
The question is can they rally it up?

I am not understanding?

I respect that you are/have been there-done that. So, you can share a depth of perspective on this issue that I can not. But what do you mean, can they "rally it up?"

I mean, we know:

1. Daniel will not die.

2. Daniel will be rescued.

So there is no real suspense while awaiting the next part. The only question is -- will Jack and the other SG people go together to do the rescue -- thus being pulled away from other business? Or will Jack go alone? Will Jack or the others be injured?

What "moral of the story are they going to tell us?" That drug lords and terrorists are evil? We pretty much know that as a country and as a world.

Yes-- the Opening episode - Part two will have to measure up, for sure.

When I compare this Season's ender -- with the previous Season's in which there was really intense stuff happening with TEAL'C/Aphosis/JACK/the TEAM -- etc....it just falls flat--for me. Not for everybody, obviously. For me.

And a lot of the reason is -- because RDA was missing so much. The shows chemistry for me is JACK/TEAL'c --- interactions.

Also-- I still maintain that there are times when you don't step across a LINE in the TV/MOVIE industry -- and in my opinion, given the timing of events, that is what Stargate has done in this two part episode.

That doesn't mean the rest of the upcoming Season won't have episodes worth watching. Just for me -- it is starting the Season out on a sour note.

BUT-- I have faith that wonderful actors/writers like Christopher Judge will turn out some more gems for me to watch!

Thanks for responding to my post! Enjoying the chat!

;)

One of the problematic limitations of the single episode/story format is that ultimately there are no surprises. We know one of the heros is going to get captured, hurt and rescued, that the bad guy is going to have several long dialogues to explain how bad he/she/it is going to be and they are going to lose and the heros will all arrive home in time for tea and crumpets with never a hair out of place.

Considering Stargate has only four heros to choose from, it is no worse (or better) than any other show in having a consistent outcome from the most outrageous plots.

What matters is what happens in the middle. What surprises can be sprung in telling the story. And for that, overall, SG does appear to be doing better than say Star Trek, where the favourite game is now playing pairs with the story lines and series.

Okay perhaps this episode does look a little 'stock' and my compliments to you for catching it. But here we will have to hope that the good bits are waiting to be sprung in the second part.

The case for...

Thank you for the concicse reply, Ray. It saves me from thinking this soon from getting back from Gatecon. ;)

Rowan <another 'T-shirt wearer' from the US Army and Desert Storm and not the least upset about the story plot...

I agree it was stupid of Jackson to go exploring in a country like Honduras without any military escort. Although if he wanted to maintain a low profile it is unlikely he could have sufficient backup to make a difference if an organised paramilitary group surprised him.
The Mayan ruins are in Honduras, an insecure country with high levels of organised crime and a military influenced government. Various guerrilla groups quite frequently abduct individuals for ransom demands. Not all terrorists are the same as Alqueda, most paramilitaries in Honduras are only interested in money and power over Honduras.

I'm with Goobr with this one. I thought the whole Honduras plot was completely idiotic for many reasons:

1. It's a scifi show, not the A-Team. The show has such a marvellous premise of exploring the universe and that's what I tune in for, not to see a tired plot that could have been used on the A-Team or MacGuyver in the 80's.

2. No backup. Why would Hammond send one of his key people to a country rife with civil war, kidnapping of foreigners, death squads on both sides and narco terrorism without any backup?

3. The Native Guide: The US has had military advisors and intelligence operatives working in that part of the world for 100 years. I'm sure that there would have been plenty of people available to escort Daniel to the site. He wouldn't have had to go through a local.

4. And while I'm on that subject, that scene where Daniel meets the local and discusses their plans in a public place, in normal conversational tones, thus alerting the local bad guys that a couple of gringos will be traveling to a remote area, unarmed, is beyond stupid. NO ONE would be that dumb.

And that's just the B-plot, don't get me started on SAM suddenly doing autopsies. What, she's a coroner now? Or the oh-so-smart plan of trying to capture a guy who's impervious to energy fields in an energy field and then not using the third dart to kill him when it's clear that they're completely outclassed.

As for Jack's dumb act in the cell, the less said, the better.

My, what a nice, well-reasoned response. Do you always tell people you don't agree with to "suck it up"? If you haven't noticed, this is a discussion board, not a cheerleading site. People come on here to express their opinions, whether they be negative or positive.

I'm sick of people downng this new season of stargate, i think its one of the best seasons. Whoes with me?

Not me.

That's nice. A lot of people thought that the ending sucked bongwater.

Don't down the writers, their only doin their job

And doing it very poorly, IMHO.

And I want to know why you think, the actor would be emabarasses?

Because the *plot* is a ludicrous, contrived, abysmally stupid piece of drek and anyone associated with it should feel shame for inflicting such idiocy on the viewing public.

Four levels of Forum Communications...

There are usually four levels of forum communication seen in places such as this:

Discussion: Usually characterized by comments such as 'I though' or 'I feel'. Fairly calm and mellow on the whole.

Debate: A bit more vigerous and boisterous.

Attack: Name calling starts to happen here.

Flaming: personal assult.

Levels one and two are a good place to express personal opinions and thoughts.

It's beginning to spike into level three - not a good place to be. I know we can discuss/debate this topic and not get into namecalling and such.

Rowan <Season 7 Moderator.

I wasn't totally thrilled with the Daniel-in-the-jungle plot. I can't believe that the danger-concious SGC would send out two men without so much as a GPS equipped panic button.

Still, I like the show enough that I will watch the next one (when available in my area in January :( ) to see how the writers get themselves out of this one.

As for the level of 'tude demonstrated in the earlier postings, I think that the great and wise Rowan has spoken admirably.

You are going to see alot more of these single character driven episodes the 2nd half of season 7 and possibly into season 8 as Richard Dean Anderson has scheduling conflicts they are working around, so he literally is not there for long spells. So we will see a few of these types of episodes over the 2nd half of s7 and s8.

Scheduling...

Real life has a way of affecting your work schedule, that's for sure. But more power to him for chosing to spend the time with his daughter.

Rowan

Nothing wrong with episodes that concentrate on a single character if done properly and they do not become the sole focus of whole series (aka ST Voyager).

It allows them (the actors) to show us (the viewr) deeper into the character.

But after seven years it might be a little late to show us that Dan is actually a mad scientist at heart?

Huh?

Ray, I don't think I'm following you here.

"mad scientist"? Could you give me an example becasue I think I'm missing something.

Rowan

No examples, it was an open comment, though wandering off into woods full of unpleasant folks, on his tod might be considered a tad mad?

The point is that after seven years it would be very difficult to suggest that Daniel, or any other member of the SG crew are or were anything other than how they have been portrayed.
Yet that is what single character episodes are usually best suited too, showing that people did have something else in life and/or something to hide.

Thanks...

Thanks, Ray. I thionk it was just the 'mad scientist' comment that threw me off for a minute.
