I agree with PKGirl here. The whole Tom Bombadil section of the bok is out of kilt with the rest. It would have shown even worse in the film.
As a character though, he is still interesting

No, truthfully, I did like his character. He was a nice contrast to the rest of the people in the story. I thought it was reassuring to have at least one person who wasn't terrified of the ring or it's power.

According to PJ (in TTT commentary) there is an homage to old Tom in the extended cut when Treebeard expresses Tom's attitude about the world. You just gotta pay attention to the extended cut (in which they also added that bit about Aragorn's age :naughty: )
