What does a chap do with an enchanted sword?

This is what Valder, an army scout, has the problem of finding out after his sword is enchanted by a disgruntled wizard in a hurry and finding that enchantment can be a double edged.

Obviously it kills people, even if only one at a time. So the army can always find a use for that in the never ending war against the Northerners.

But each time he draws the blade it brings Valder one step closer to having his sword kill him. Until then he can be butchered, hurt and become old and frail. What happens when there are no more enemies to kill because the war is over, or not enough of him left to handle the sword?
